Cinematography blog task
1) Write an analysis of the cinematography in the opening sequence. Highlight your use of media language and try to cover camera shots, angles and movement using the terminology we have learned in lessons.
This opening sequence of Teen Wolf uses a big close up shot of the main characters face, then there is an extreme closeup shot of the characters eye which creates suspense and intrigues the audience as the closeup shows the characters eye turn red. At this point the audience are wondering who this character is then there is a mid shot where you can see the characters face to his mid section.
In the next scene there is a medium closeup of the next character which shows his body and his surroundings which gives the audience some information about the character. They can understand that he is doing research suggesting he is involved in drama.
In the next scene there is a closeup shot of the female characters face accentuating her features suggesting she may be a femme-fatale then the camera and then suddenly the camera is moved away from the character.
The next scene may be shot using a hand held camera to create a shaky, unsteady effect whilst it is going through the alley. This creates an eerie atmosphere.
In the next scene there is a mid close up shot which quickly turns into a closeup when the two characters are kissing.
The rest of the scenes use close ups and mid close up shots to present the characters faces.
2) How does the camerawork give the audience clues about the setting, narrative and character?
The camera work allows the audience to understand the genre of the text as well as understand who the main characters are. The camera work suggests the genre of the text is a drama and the camera movements as well as the extreme close up are dramatic and convey the main characters.
3) Find and analyse three film or TV stills. Embed the images in your blog and analyse the camera shot/angle and what they communicate to the audience.
The camera angle use in this image is a high angle which is used to make the character seem vulnerable and to present the threatening situation she is facing, This angle makes the character seem small compared to the setting. The audience can infer that the character is in danger and the audience sympathise with her,
The camera angle used her is a low angle which is used to convey that the characters are looking down on someone and they seem intimidating and scary. The low angle shot is also quite unflattering in this image which makes the characters seem like they are the villains and make them unlikable to the audience.
This is a high angle shot which is used to portray that the characters are vulnerable and in danger. This also suggests that the characters are facing a bigger force than them, This suggests that the characters are intimidated and foreshadows their defeat.
