Preliminary exercise: Music video extract

Task: Create a short extract of the music video you plan to make for your video production coursework.

1) State the song and genre you have chosen for your music video.

The song is called ' I'm not racist' by Joyner Lucas
The genre is hip hop, rap.

2) Choose at least three music videos similar to your song or concept and watch them several times. Make bullet-point notes on everything you watch, commenting on camerawork, editing and mise-en-scene.

Common - Letter to the Free
  • slow paced camera movements
  • low-key lighting
  • The video is in black and white to emphasise the meaning of the song and not to take any attention away from it
  • The prison setting is used to give audiences an insight into the problems of the prison system and how bias it is against black people.
  • Gilroy's idea of black diasporic identity can be applied to this music video
  • Hall's theory of race representations
Donald Glover- This is America

  • Black and white- low key lighting
  •  meets the key conventions of a music video as it includes a performative element and uses a narrative of black people in America
  • visual effects when the artist was shooting the gun
  • Gilroy's theory can be applied here as the music video shows how black people have never had a sense of belonging in America or been accepted in western societies to this day
  • intertextuality of cases of police brutality and racism at the time.

Kendrick Lamar- The Blacker the Berry

  • Gilroy's theory can be applied
  • Hall's theory can also be applied as it is evident that one of his characterisation of black people in the media has been portrayed
  • This music video can be seen as returning to the true purpose of hip hop which is to give black people a voice and make sure they heard and to expose the harsh realities black people face.
3) Write or edit your treatment just to include the 30-60 seconds you will make for this preliminary exercise.

Colour scheme:  dark, blues, greys and whites. Low key lighting, use of shadows, creates dark lonely atmosphere.

Scene 1:establishing shot. close up shot etc
close up shot of a white man lip syncing the lyrics, he is angry. The camera is rotating around his head with a mixture of close up and medium shots. he gets up walking around the table with the camera rotating around him he slams the table in anger and fury.

scene 2:
long shot, you can see both characters face to face, then there is another close up shot of him lips, he starts walking around, gets more aggressive.

scene 3:
white man sits down, black man starts talking about his side, close up shots, rotating camera, pushes the table, starts to get angry.

scene4:
they both hug, camera slowly pans around them and slowly backs away into a long shot

4) Write a shot list containing EVERY shot you plan to film AND additional shots to create flexibility when editing. These additional shots are often close-ups, cutaways, alternative angles or similar. I advise using a simple table on Microsoft Word to set out your shot list - you can find an example here

SHOT LIST- preliminary exercise

establishing shot, shots of working class neighbourhood
panning movements , start low, move up to the sky then from the sky back down to the floor
close up shots of man's feet walking,
close up shot of his face, zoom in on his eyes, he looks in a different direction, camera moves to where he is looking
over the shoulder shot of the man walking
Point of view shot- can see the neighbourhood
close up on his clothes- shoes, jacket, hoodie etc
close up of his face- clear facial expressions
medium shot of him walking
extreme close up of him lip syncing

5) Plan your mise-en-scene: what iconography are you including to ensure your audience understands the genre or narrative? Plan your cast, costume, make-up, props, lighting and setting. For this preliminary task, use just one location to keep it simple.

costume- urban, street style clothes- big jacket, hoodie, trainers, durag
lighting- natural lighting, low key lighting, shadows
setting- poor, working-middle class neighbourhood, rainy, cloudy day- adds to the harsh atmoshphere
cast- young black man for the preliminary task
props- headphones, phone,basketball

6) Plan a shooting schedule that will ensure everything is filmed by the deadline. Include when, where, who is required and what shots you will complete at each time/location. Remember: social distancing!

I will be shooting my music video after school, in a neighbourhood near mine- i will shoot during the evening so i can take advantage of the lighting changes which will add to the atmosphere in my music video.
